Ascoli Piceno

The town is 25 km from the Adriatic Sea, at the confluence between the river Tronto and the Castellano, is surrounded by Montagna dell'Ascensione, the Colle San Marco and the Montagna dei Fiori, between two natural parks, Monti Sibillini and Monti della Laga

History of Ascoli

The tradition tells that the city was founded by a group of Sabini led by a woodpecker, there the group would be merged with other indigenous peoples, giving rise to Piceni.

In 299 BC the city became Civitas Foederata of Rome, but in 91 BC ther city rebels to Rome; after a long siege the city was regained and in 49 BC Julius Caesar give it the name: Ascoli Picenum.

During the Middle Ages, the city suffered the raids of the barbarians, and for two centuries it was under the dominion of Longobardi, until it came under the control of  Charlemagne. In 1183 the city was destroyed by Frederick II, after a period of struggle between the Ascoli's families, in 1482 Ascoli is forced to recognize the sovereignty of the Church.

In 1860 Ascoli viene was annexed to the Regno d'Italia.

Art and Culture

Ascoli Piceno is one of the most beautiful cities f Italy. Its historic center is entirely made in travertine, with the Renaissance Piazza del Popolo that houses the Palazzo dei Capitani with the historic Caffè Meletti, the Chiesa di San Francesco, the loggia dei Mercanti and Teatro Ventidio Basso.

Piazza Arringo is the oldest square in Ascoli, here stands the Cattedrale di Sant'Emidio hosting the crypt dedicated to the patron of the city, and the medieval Battistero San Giovanni, the Palazzo dell'Arengo with the Pinacoteca Civica and the Palazzo Vescovile. The center is characterized by evocative medieval streets and many other monuments.

The Quintana

The Quintana held the first first Sunday in August, the solemn historic parade involving more than 1,500 masked people and the city authorities. After the parade the tournament of Quintana.

On Monte Vettore at 1941 m the mysterious Lake Pilate keep the endemic Chirocephalus Marchesonii: a small crustacean which lives only in these waters.
